A significant number of people would be well aware of the manufacturing (weaving) of selvedge denim fabric, but very few would be informed about the sewing of denim jeans made out of the same fabric, called selvedge denim jeans. The difference between a regular denim jeans and a selvedge denim jeans is the outseam – in case of regular jeans either the edges are over-edged or joined via lap seam, but in case of selvedge denim jeans, the edges, inclusive of the fabric selvedge, are sewn together and busted out using irons. In the March issue of StitchWorld, Goodpeople Clothing Company, retailing selvedge denim jeans in the Indian market under the brand name ‘Korra’ has been covered. Along with the focus on Goodpeople Clothing’s manufacturing model and practices, discussed also are recommendations for sewing selvedge denim from the Italian denim sewing specialist Vibemac. Continuing with the series of articles on Industrial Engineering, this issue contains an article on Machinery and Manpower Planning. Though allocating the right person to the right task with right machinery is one of the very sensitive issues, it is not given due importance by most of the IEs. A mismatch of requirements (may be manpower or machinery) to the actual allocation may lead to serious imbalances in the process; this may hamper the performance of the setup. Discussed in detail are the planning and allocation techniques such as resource based planning and target based planning. Equally significant highlight of this issue is the coverage of the recently concluded GTE 2015 technology exposition in New Delhi.
