
The Sammilito Parishad, a panel for the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) polls for the 2024-2026 term has presented their candidates at an event in Chittagong on Saturday.
The Forum panel, endorsed by former president Rubana Huq, is also running for 35 seats in the elections scheduled for 9thMarch. At the function, which took place in a hotel in the port city, all 35 of the Sammilito Parishad‘s candidates—including SM Mannan (Kochi), the presidential candidate—were presented.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, who is backing the parishad, joined it alongside former presidents and leaders.
Speaking to the audience the speakers celebrated the United Council’s remarkable past, present, and promising future in the apparel sector.
They demonstrated the significant contributions of panel leader SM Mannan (Kochi) and underscored the dedicated roles played by other candidates across diverse facets of the industry.
During the panel briefing, speakers raised the issue of harassment faced by garment owners from customs officials, particularly concerning bond licences.
They recommended that to reduce duty evasion and simplify its taxation procedures, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) look into other options. To keep the sector growing, Faruque Hassan urged BGMEA members to cast their ballots for the candidates they support.
Prominent figures including Members of Parliament Anisul Islam Mahmud, Abdus Salam, and Khosru Chowdhury, along with former BGMEA president SM Fazlul Haque, Mostofa Golam Quddus, former leaders SM Abu Tayyab, Nasir Uddin, among others, also vowed for the panel’s success in the upcoming polls.
SM Mannan (Kochi) pledged in his speech to use a combination of youthful energy and experience to promote sustainability in the apparel sector.
