A runway show was held on 13th July to raise awareness of trash management at the National Institute of Fashion Technology’s Chennai campus. Along with honouring the city’s conservancy workers, the event featured student-designed artwork.
“We aimed to honour conservancy workers who endure tough conditions to retain cleanliness in our city,” shared Anitha Mabel Manohar, director of NIFT. “Through this event, our purpose was to increase awareness about sustainable initiatives and the advantages of recycling textile waste.”
Named ‘Shine Beyond Streets,’ the fashion show had NIFT Chennai students displaying their versions of utilitarian and workwear fashion, including high-visibility saree belts and adorned tools.
NIFT Chennai partnered with private conservancy agency Urbaser Sumeet for the event. The agency used the platform to support the public to either donate discarded clothing or dispose of it separately from general waste. “This simple action can considerably enhance our waste management efforts,” shared Mahmood Sait, CEO of Urbaser Sumeet.
