Assyst – Enhancing design development, manufacturing process through ‘Vidya’
Assyst, a leading worldwide provider of PLM, CAD/CAM, 2-D/3-D design and cost-optimization solutions that simplify and enhance the design development and manufacturing process in the retail and sewing goods industry, demonstrated its 3-D visualizing system, Vidya which is a virtual sample fitting solution that eliminates the need for multiple fit samples.
The visitors got a professional presentation on morphing the 2D patterns onto a 3D avatar in the desired size and fabric in a variety of poses. Fit problems or issues with drape were immediately apparent and a tape measure and virtual pins provided the Vidya user with familiar tools to make alterations and view their effects. This software can be used to check pattern pieces using 3D visualization to detect any possible flaws prior to the initial cut. Material characteristics and fabric types are stored in a database for easy access. The system is designed to eliminate the high costs associated with creating prototypes, and the digital images can be shared with partners internationally.
“Basically the collection, development, profits from faster and more seamless processes, and items of clothing and drafts can be tested as digital designs on the virtual model,” said Thomas Baur, Director, Sales International, Assyst.
There seems to be various applications for this software starting from sample development stage, made-to-measure mass production to retail services.
“This software has scope in mass production as it has a regular size program, and the body measurements taken up through 3D scanning can be used to apply the difference in measurements to the regular size patterns. The system will then automatically generate patterns for the particular body size,” explained Thomas Baur of Assyst.
“The software will one day find its way into retail,” Baur further added. “If a lady today walks into a store to buy a pair of jeans, she has to try 6 to 8 pairs on an average before she can find the right fit for herself. But with the help of this software which will have all the information of all the sizes of each brands, the lady will just scan her body and our solution will tell her which size of which brand will suit her body best and in this scenario she will just need to try on 2 pairs of jeans before she finds the perfect fit. This type of technology can also be used in a different way by taking the body scan of the customer and then putting different garments on this 3D image of the customer enabling him to see how well the colour, style and fit is suiting him.”
Human Solutions – Compact for wide applications displays 3D body scanner
Today’s apparel supplier must look for new ways to offer his customers top-quality goods at highly competitive prices. Production at different sites both domestically and abroad, pricing pressure, expanding expectations from customers, and ever-decreasing time cycles for collections are only a few of the challenges which must be met head-on within the next few years.
With its three spheres of competence – measurement, simulation and integration – Human Solutions sets the apparel industry standards for the virtual realization of the human being – and consequently for correct fit, quality assurance and cost-efficiency.
As one of the world market leader for body scanning, the Human Solutions Company showcased its 3D body scanner in the exhibition. With the help of this scanner, highly accurate methods for the acquisition of body dimensions have been developed. The body scanner’s optical triangulation process by Human Solutions is currently the most accurate method of measurement in the world. It enables the contact-free and fully-automated acquisition of more than 140 body dimensions and an exact, three-dimensional image of the human body. The scan time per person lasts for less than 10 seconds, from head to foot.
This data can then be used for a multitude of purposes. A measurement program in Germany known as SizeGermany used this body scanning technology to measure a representative cross-section of the entire population. This program helped in updating body dimension tables, with result that the garment sizes now correspond to the proportions of today’s human being and manufacturers can optimize their cut designs. It also incorporated the background information of the measured test persons so that in future this will enable manufacturers to selectively address demands for style, design and fit.
“We are in talks with few institutes for a sizing survey of the Indian population as well as in varied applications like mass customization and retail services,” said Dr. Jochen Balzulat, President, Human Solutions of North America, Inc. A lot of organizations have problems with fitting, thereby building losses in the revenues because they are holding inventory they do not need. “This is specifically true for very high volume garments like military uniforms or very expensive equipments like body armour.
So we have a system with the scanner where the soldier can be scanned and a format is printed with the list of garments he shall receive with the suggested size,” said Dr. Jochen Balzulat, explaining the use of 3D technology elaborating with an example of its application.
