India is rapidly establishing itself as a global leader in textiles and fashion through landmark initiatives such as the PM MITRA Parks, the National Technical Textiles Mission, and an emphasis on sustainability and global competitiveness, according to Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita.
Speaking at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai, the minister highlighted the ongoing transformation within the fashion industry, noting that the focus is shifting from commercial success to conscious creation. He said the world of fashion was embracing sustainability, ethical fashion, and slow design, while also witnessing a resurgence of pride in India’s textile heritage — encompassing natural dyeing, hand weaving, recycling, and zero-waste tailoring.
He added that the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with global sensibilities was positioning Indian design as one of the most dynamic in the world today.
The minister was present at NIFT Mumbai to inaugurate the institute’s newly constructed academic buildings, symbolising its continued pursuit of superior infrastructure and advanced learning environments. During the event, he unveiled a commemorative plaque for the new academic block and observed technical textile demonstrations and curated student exhibitions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to nurturing future leaders in design and innovation.
Margherita noted that NIFT Mumbai and NIFT Daman have fostered a culture of innovation and creativity through state-of-the-art infrastructure, skilled faculty, and vibrant student communities, which have earned them recognition as leading design institutions in the country.
The convocation ceremony saw the conferral of degrees upon 312 students from NIFT Mumbai and 29 from NIFT Daman, celebrating their academic and creative achievements. The event underscored NIFT Mumbai’s dedication to empowering students through world-class education and progressive facilities.
