Sumeet Exports, a Ludhiana based exporter of kidswear, has gone in for 20 per cent manpower cost-cutting of unskilled workers and helpers on the shop floor, resulting in the company to be more competitive and productive. Sumeet Thapar, MD said, “We have a strong HR department which focuses on training and development of workers. Over the last one year the IE Department, HR and shop floor have worked together to bring about improvements, like the operator himself will cut the extra threads in the line instead of an extra worker which we were hiring earlier for thread cutting. In the same vein, we focus to make our workforce more skilled by training them on extra operations so that they can do various works themselves instead of depending on others. Although it was not easy, as in the beginning the workers thought that they would be doing extra work, but after the learning and execution, they were happy to do more work in the same time without any extra efforts.”
The company is also expecting some good growth in the coming years due to positive indicators that it has been receiving recently. “Switzerland’s biggest supermarket chain and largest employer, Migros, which was earlier doing business with Bangladesh, has placed an order of 1.5 lakh pieces with us. I am also in touch with other major buyers and they are unhappy with Bangladesh, so I am hoping for a few more orders next season,” says Sumeet.
