Sub-Sahara region has clocked US $ 787.37 million in its garment exports to USA during January-August ’20 period – marking 16.43 per cent Y-o-Y fall, as per OTEXA.
Out of all major African manufacturing destinations, only Ethiopia managed to see a yearly growth, while Kenya, Lesotho and Madagascar fell in their respective apparel shipment to USA.
Kenya, the top exporter from Africa, clocked US $ 252.40 million in its shipment to USA, noting 18.13 per cent downfall from the same period of the previous year.
32 per cent of the total Sub-Saharan garment exports to USA was contributed by Kenya in Jan.-Aug. ’20 period, which was 32.69 per cent in the corresponding period of 2019.
Lesotho too was down by 14.47 per cent in its shipment to USA and the export values totalled US $ 160.21 million in the first 8-month period of 2020.
Ethiopia, on the other hand, kept growing in 2020, despite turbulence created by pandemic. During Jan.-Aug. ’20 period, Ethiopia shipped US $ 141.54 million worth of garments to USA, surging 9.22 per cent on Y-o-Y basis.
