Even if member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) finally reached a deal in Geneva concluding the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) recently, the least developed countries (LDCs)– including Bangladesh– are not a very happy lot.
Media reports maintained this adding some developed and advanced developing countries did not agree on extending the post-graduation benefits to the LDCs even as their hectic parleys to extend the trade benefit for a few more years after the graduation from the UN-defined status did not get the necessary support in the multilateral trade negotiation.
It may be mentioned here on graduating to a developing nation, Bangladesh will lose the trade benefits it currently enjoys as an LDC, which experts fear will have an adverse impact on the country’s exports including on apparel exports.
