Chittagong Port lived up to its reputation of being Bangladesh’s premier sea port once again after it handled 30,97,236 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in the just concluded fiscal year (fiscal year 2020-21) compared to that of 30,04,142 TEUs of the previous year, clocking 3.1 per cent year-on-year growth.
And this achievement comes for Chittagong Port, which is responsible for handling lion’s share of Bangladesh’s imports and exports including apparel shipments, amidst the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, which is also reflective of Bangladesh’s growing foreign trade notwithstanding coronavirus pandemic.
According to Md. Omar Faruk, Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), the figure of 30,04,142 TEUs was arrived at after considering the volume of containers handled by the Kamalapur Inland Container Depot and the Pangaon Inland Container Terminal even as M. Shahjahan, who is the Chairman of CPA, on his part added that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the port had been operating round the clock and had not stopped operation even for a single day.
