
Faruque Hassan, the President of Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has requested the Director of Better Work in Geneva, Dan Rees, to share the positive developments in the apparel sector of Bangladesh on global forums and with the stakeholders.
Media reports maintained this adding BGMEA chair Faruque Hassan, made this request during his recent meeting with Dan Rees in Geneva even as they discussed the activities and progress of the Better Work programme in improving working conditions and competitiveness in the Bangladesh garment industry.
Underlining Bangladesh apparel industry has made exemplary progress in terms of workplace safety and labour rights through the unprecedented collaboration of development partners, global brands and retailers, manufacturers, the Government, ILO, and local and global unions, the BGMEA President said the industry has continued to maintain the momentum.
For information, Better Work results from a partnership between the UN’s International Labour Organization and the International Finance Corporation (a member of the World Bank Group), which brings diverse groups together to improve the working conditions in the garment industry and make the sector more competitive.
