In what may be termed a major development towards transitioning to a circular and climate-neutral garment industry in Bangladesh, the apex garment makers body in the country – the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and fashion retailer H&M have entered into a deal towards achieving the same by reducing carbon emissions by 30 per cent.
The President of BGMEA Faruque Hassan and the CEO of H&M Helena Helmersson recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Dhaka on developing and implementing a strategic roadmap to this end.
A press communiqué issued by the BGMEA underlined this.
It may be mentioned here that according to the data from Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Bangladesh produced 169.06 million tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions in 2021, which will become 409.41 million tonnes by 2030 even as per a study carried out by McKinsey in 2018, global fashion industry emitted about 2.1 billion tonnes of GHG, which is equivalent to about 4 per cent of total global GHG emission.
