Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port is all set to create a record of handling the highest volume of containers in its 133-year history, this year!
According to reports, Chittagong Port in 2019 handled around 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in a year for the first even if in the next year container handling took a hit on account of the Coronavirus pandemic and the port dropped out of the “Three Million Club” in terms of container handling.
However, with reported hike in export and import lately post-pandemic, container handling witnessed a sharp increase even as import and export reached the pre-pandemic level and the port, reportedly, handled around 3.07 million TEUs of containers till 15 December 2021 even as port officials, reportedly, estimate that by the end of the year, they will be able to handle about 3.2 million TEUs of containers, which will then take the port’s container handling, in terms of volume, to the highest ever, since its inauguration in 1888.
…other ports across the world suffered from backlogs, but we have kept the situation normal with the help of all the stakeholders related to the port, which has benefitted the process of container handling, reportedly, maintained Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan, speaking to the media while adding the port officials and employees have been keeping the port operational, risking their lives amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
