To reduce the time and cost of cotton imports, which is the main raw material for readymade garments produced by Bangladesh, the textile mill owners in the country have called for direct shipping services between USA and Chittagong.
Media reports maintained this adding the President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has made this call to US cotton exporters at a seminar titled, ‘US cotton and the golden triangle of spinning profitability’ organised by the Cotton USA recently.
“…direct vessel service will definitely increase the use of US cotton in Bangladesh,” reportedly, stated BTMA President Mohammad Ali Khokon even as he added Bangladesh currently imports around 11 per cent of its cotton requirement from USA while underlining this is likely to increase to around 14 per cent this year and, if the direct vessel service is introduced between Chittagong and USA, import of cotton will increase further.
