Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s leading textile-exporting state, accounting for 21.84% of the country’s total textile exports, according to the latest data released by the National Import Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade (NIRYAT).
The NIRYAT report for the financial year 2024–25 shows that Tamil Nadu exported textiles worth US $7,997.17 million, securing the top position among all states and outperforming several traditional industrial hubs.
Gujarat ranked second with textile exports valued at US $5,646.01 million, while Maharashtra placed third with exports totalling US $3,831.28 million. Other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal, also contributed to the national export performance.
The report highlighted a strong growth trajectory for Tamil Nadu’s textile sector. Exports from the state stood at US $6,193.39 million in 2020–21 and have since risen by 29% over four years, marking an increase of US $1,803.78 million.
State government sources indicated that the growth has been driven by targeted policies and specialised incentives aimed at supporting the textile industry and its workforce. They noted that these measures have strengthened the state’s competitiveness in global markets.
India’s total textile exports were valued at US $36,610 million in 2024–25, with Tamil Nadu’s substantial share underlining its dominant position in the sector.
