Even as the workers’ representative on the minimum wage board for garment workers put forward a proposal recently suggesting a minimum monthly salary of Taka 20,393 for the workers, the factory owners on the other hand proposed Taka 10,400 as minimum wage per month for the workers in the sector.
However, this proposal by the factory owners has been rejected by the trade unions, reports underlined.
Representative of factory owners Md Siddiqur Rahman apparently advocated this.
Different labour rights organisations rejected both the owners’ and workers’ representatives’ suggestions to the wage board and sought Taka 23,000–Taka 25,000 as the RMG workers’ minimum monthly wage in their place.
The minimum wage proposal from the industrial owners was also referred to as “mockery” by trade union leaders.
The wage board chairman allegedly stated in the interim that “the gap is quite wide between the proposed amounts” and “we have requested them to narrow it down in the next meeting of the board,” which is anticipated to be conducted on 1st November.
The recommendation was created, according to the workers’ representative Sirajul Islam Roni, taking into consideration the minimum cost of living, the standard of living, and the cost even if according to reports, Siddiqur Rahman claimed that their plan was based on the needs of the workforce and the RMG industry’s capacity.
