Canada has some sustainable plans up its sleeve for converted textiles and leathers.
The Department of Toxic Substance Control, Canada, better known as DTSC, recommends to list some treatments that contain perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
These PFAS, marked by highly stable carbon-fluorine bonds, can be used on converted textiles or leather that includes carpets, shoes and apparels under the Safer Consumer Products (SCP) regulations.
DTSC said that if human beings come into any contact with PFAS through food, water or inhalation, the chemicals may remain in the body for a long time and cause more harm.
And it doesn’t end here! PFAS can eventually lead to major ailments including thyroid hormone disorder and cancer. DTSC in its report has revealed that such treatments can also cause significant and widespread effects on foetuses, babies, children, pregnant ladies, apparel and shoe workers and many others.
A step has definitely been taken by DTSC Canada, which the world must recognise and act to revolutionalise this initiative! What needs to be seen is how much it takes forward to control the harmful effects of PFAS.
