American peer-to-peer e-commerce site famous amongst users who want to trade in handmade or vintage products and supplies, as well as novelty items just opened its new global headquarters in Dumbo, New York, USA. With the opening of their new home, the company is upping its ante in the sustainability game through a series of new ventures.
The new HQ was created with the idea of making the most sustainable office building ever – this was achieved first and foremost by sourcing from local businesses for all their needs including food processing, building decor, to create a close knit local community that can come together to create positive impacts on the environment.
Taking this initiative of creating a more ethical and eco-friendly world, Etsy has launched an open-source software called DIVERTsy. With the goal of diverting about 90 per cent of the waste created by Etsy and other businesses, the software helps in measuring all forms of waste created by your organization including everything from electronics, to food to textiles waste. This initiative aligns extremely well with Etsy’s overall brand ethos that have always focused on sustaining smaller communities and locally owned business all over the world.
In a time when big consumer groups like the millennials are becoming more and more keen on supporting sustainable brands, even if that comes at heftier price tags, this software could prove to be a huge bane for solving the industry’s biggest problem, which is ‘waste’!
