The Clean Clothes Campaign – a global network dedicated to improve working conditions and empowering workers – has launched a new campaign called ‘Pay Your Workers’.
The campaign focuses on apparel brands and retailers with outsourced production like H&M, Nike and Primark as these brands have been reported frequently for violation of workers’ rights during the pandemic from workers.
The step is to urge the brands and retailers to commit to wages assurance, which will assure that the brands and retailers pay the fair amount to the workers in the supply chain and also make sure workers can no longer be left jobless without their legally owed severance.
The campaign targets some of the wealthiest apparel supply chains in the world, as these brands have made good profits for decades on the basis of poverty wages and outsourced responsibility while not paying any contribution to any social protection in garment producing countries.
“Our campaign aims to reclaim funds for the workers, by convincing brands to take responsibility for the people who enabled great profits through their underpaid labour,” said Ineke Zeldenrust from the Clean Clothes Campaign.
As per a report on Un(der)paid in the pandemic, the garment industry owns around US $ 3.2-5.8 billion in unpaid wages, legally owed bonuses and compensation. The sum is for the first 3 months and report has been published by the Clean Clothes Campaign.
