
During a commemorative gathering recently, politicians and labour leaders paid tribute to the lifelong dedication of labour leader Shah Atiul Islam to secure the rights of the workers.
The event, held at the Sangskriti Bikash Kendra in Paribagh, was organised by the Bangladesh Trade Union Centre and Garment Sramik Samhati in honour of the third anniversary of Shah Atiul Islam’s passing.
Taslima Akhter, the acting president of TUF, presided over the event.
Zonayed Saki, the chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan, emphasised Shah Atiul Islam’s tireless efforts in championing workers’ rights.
However, he also pointed out that the labour community in the country currently faces significant deprivation.
Saki urged leaders of labour rights organisations to continue Shah Atiul Islam’s unfinished work and advocate for workers’ rights.
Garment labour leader Taslima Akhter highlighted the hardships faced by garment workers in the country due to the rising prices of essential goods and called for an immediate revision of their wages.
AKM Zahirul Islam, another labour leader, emphasised that Shah Atiul Islam had been unwavering in his commitment to the labour movement and its ideals, never compromising on them.
Other speakers at the event included garment labour leader Babul Hossain, Bachchu Bhuiyan, Juslhasnayeen Babu, Alif Dewan, and Shah Atiul Islam’s wife, Sohela Rumi.
Shah Atiul Islam passed away in a Dhaka hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago.
