Close to 82.19 per cent of garment manufacturing units in Bangladesh have paid partial salaries to their workers for April as of 19th April even as 90 per cent of factories have already paid the festival bonus and 98.84 per cent have cleared the salary for March.
This is as per media reports, which cited the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in this regard.
Speaking on this critical issue of salary disbursement before the holy festival of Eid ul-Fitr, Faruque Hassan reportedly opined that initially, it was thought that many factories will face challenges in paying their workers on time as factories have had fewer work orders from the global buyers (brands and retailers), thanks to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and its economic ramifications.
Reports, further citing data from the country’s Industrial Police, maintained 1,026 out of 1,631 BGMEA member factories, or around 62.91 per cent of the total, paid the festival bonus as of 19th April even as 553 out of 700 factories that are members of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) disbursed bonus to their workers, accounting for 79 per cent of the total.
