Japan has announced to fund US $ 446,428 to boost the apparel and textile industry in Palestine and thereby enhance employment opportunities in the country, particularly for women and youth.
This is one among the nine projects initiated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) that has funding support from Japan, with total finances touching US $ 5.8 billion.
The project aims at enhancing competitiveness in Palestine’s garment and textile sector with new design and also focuses on developing creative approaches.
“Encouraging creativity not only helps in driving economic competitiveness but also motivates several young men and women to develop creative approaches so as to initiate new industrial ventures with a continual vision towards future transformation of their societies.” – Marlen Bakalli, Project Manager, UNIDO
There are also plans to set up a garment and fashion design centre to offer services to main stakeholders of apparel and textile industry including business development and design in a sustainable way.
More on the funding support from Japan, Takeshi Okubo, Ambassador of Japan for Palestinian Affairs, said that the basic aid policy of Japan to Palestine is to enable sustainable economic development and hence facilitate nation-building process based on two-state solution.
