Over 25 per cent of British citizens who are going to a festive event this year, such as New Year’s Eve festivities, intend to purchase used party attire a new YouGov survey on behalf of Oxfam has found.
Nearly 30 per cent of people who purchased new clothing for a Christmas or New Year’s party last year acknowledged that they only wore it once, 40 per cent said they wore it twice or three times, and 7 per cent said they never wore it.
Nearly half (47 per cent) of those planning to purchase a new outfit stated that they were most likely to do so as a “treat” to themselves, according to the study, while 22 per cent claimed they lacked any appropriate apparel. The reason that respondents “felt good wearing something new” (15 per cent) was the third most common one.
In an effort to “help save money and the planet,” Oxfam is urging British consumers to switch to secondhand party attire this year, as 73 per cent of them anticipate spending between US $ 13 and US $ 77 on new outfits. According to the charity, customers can also contribute their party attire for the enjoyment of others.
Oxfam is advocating for a shift away from disposable holiday clothing and towards second-hand goods, and the campaign has even received celebrity support.
