SHEIN is set to open a pop-up store in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2nd-11th August. The temporary retail space will offer local shoppers a chance to experience SHEIN’s trendy fashion and lifestyle products firsthand, with opportunities to try on items and order them online at discounted prices.
The pop-up store will also feature local brand ambassadors and influencers who have been enlisted for a pre-opening marketing campaign. This initiative comes as SHEIN, alongside its competitor Temu, navigates the post-pandemic surge in online shopping. Both companies have faced scrutiny over potential tax evasion by exporting small quantities of goods to sidestep higher duties.
Local fashion retailers have advocated for a 45 per cent import duty on clothing to level the playing field. In response, SHEIN is actively engaging with South African regulators to ensure compliance with local laws. A company spokesperson emphasised that such tax measures are not crucial to their business model, highlighting that SHEIN’s competitive pricing is sustained by their technology-driven on-demand model and flexible supply chain.
