Ever since US Peta became a shareholder in Urban Outfitters in April 2020, it has been urging the retailer and its subsidiary brands to embrace animal-friendly policies.
Giving a further push to its initiative, Peta has now started a global campaign against Urban Outfitters and its other brands like Anthropologie and Free People.
Through the campaign, Peta is strongly voicing its concerns over retailer’s use of wool, alpaca, leather, silk, down, mohair and cashmere as all these induce extreme cruelty against animals.
The organisation has been protesting in front of the retailer’s London store.
To make their appeal more authentic and reach everyone, some of the protestors dressed up as animals, while some used audio sounds of animals being abused.
Many protestors were even holding signs that read ‘Urban Outfitters: Animals Are Not Clothing’.
More on the same, Elisa Allen, Director, Peta, said that Urban Outfitters and its brands are trying to reach young and progressive people through their designs, but selling the skin and hairs of animals will not take them anywhere.
Peta said that it will continue to urge the retailer to remain true to its commitment to sustainability and stop selling animal skin and hair.
Notably, Nordstrom had also recently announced its plans to ban exotic animal skins by the end of 2021.
Urban Outfitters is majorly known for its apparels for men and women as well as for its footwear and accessories. It generated revenue of US $ 3.9 billion in 2019.
