British fashion house Paul Smith has appointed former Fortnum & Mason chief executive Ewan Venters as its first executive chairman, effective from 1 October.
Venters, who has been a non-executive director at Paul Smith since February, previously served as CEO of international art gallery Hauser & Wirth. Before that, he spent eight years at the helm of Fortnum & Mason, where he oversaw what was described as a transformation and period of unparalleled growth. His earlier career also included senior leadership roles at department store chain Selfridges.
In addition to his new role at Paul Smith, Venters will continue in external positions, including chairing the private sector council of the government-backed Great campaign.
The appointment comes as Paul Smith prepares to celebrate its 55th anniversary. Paul Smith said Venters had already brought “energy and perspective” to the business as a non-executive director and added that he looked forward to working with him more closely as the brand entered its next chapter.
Venters described Paul Smith as one of Britain’s most enduring and admired fashion houses. He said it was a privilege to work alongside Sir Paul, whom he regarded as one of the country’s greatest living designers and entrepreneurs.
The move follows the company’s decision to appoint Verde Digital in August as its search engine optimisation agency. The partnership, which began in July, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the brand’s digital presence and attract new audiences.
