Dutch clothing fashion C&A which has been in Spanish market for last 34 years has shut down 23 stores in the country. The decision has left more than 300 people unemployed.
Increased competition in Spain and the growing popularity of online shopping in the country forced the retailer to opt for this move. Currently, the company operates 106 stores in Spain, but it only wants to continue with profitable stores. Although, C&A is planning to open three new stores in Spain (Zamora, Jaén and Melilla) this year.

However, the stores closure does not mean that C&A is planning to withdraw from the Spanish market entirely. “We have been successful in the Spanish market for 34 years, which proves our company fits the Iberian market,” said Domingo Esteves who is responsible for C&A Spain and Portugal operations.
Last year, C&A announced to cease all of its Turkish activities; the market where it has been active since 2007.
