UK’s Burberry has announced the completion of the acquisition of a product development business from longstanding Italian supplier, Pattern.
Burberry’s technical outerwear capabilities will be improved thanks to this strategic investment, which will also provide the company more control over the quality, price, delivery, and sustainability of its goods.
The acquisition follows the successful integration of Burberry’s leather goods base in Florence, Italy, and adds on the brand’s long history of manufacturing in the UK, where it will continue to weave gabardine and produce the iconic heritage trench coats, according to a news release from Burberry.
At Pattern’s product development facility in Turin, Italy, Burberry and Pattern have been working together to make luxury ready-to-wear items like blankets and downs for almost 20 years.
Around 70 staff from Pattern in Turin will join Burberry once the transaction is finalised, which is anticipated to happen later this year. The elements of the business not covered by the deal will continue to be run by Pattern.
“This strategic investment is an important next step in bringing our outerwear category to full potential. It will enhance our capabilities, building on our strong foundations in the UK, and provide greater control over the quality, delivery, and sustainability of our products. It’s an exciting development and I am delighted to welcome our new colleagues on board,” commented Jonathan Akeroyd, CEO.
