
Ahasanul Islam Titu, the State Minister for Commerce, announced on Tuesday that Amazon, the massive American online retailer, was looking to expand its retail operations in Bangladesh to better serve both local and foreign customers.
Following a meeting at the Commerce Ministry office in Dhaka with a team from the US-Bangladesh Business Council, he made the statement at a news conference.
The establishment of a central warehouse is mandated by the Government in the National Logistic Policy-2024. Amazon has indicated that it would like to pick up Bangladeshi items from the warehouse and distribute them to end users as part of its global supply chain.
To expand its business, Amazon wants to establish a bonded warehouse so that it can avail the duty-free facility for collecting and distributing the goods, the State Minister said.
The establishment of a central warehouse is mandated by the Government in the National Logistics Policy-2024. Amazon has indicated its interest in using this facility to gather items from Bangladesh and distribute them to customers worldwide.
The discussion also covered the import of cotton from the US by Bangladesh as well as duty-free market access for RMG items created using US cotton.
According to a statement issued by the Commerce Ministry, a delegation of nearly 30 members led by Steven Kobos, president and chief executive officer of Excelerate Energy, called on Ahasanul.
