
Tirupur-based SCM Garments, a manufacturer and exporter of knitted and hosiery garments for men, women and children, will establish a Rs. 50 crore (US $ 5.63 million) production facility in Mannargudi, Tiruvarur district. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the company and the Tamil Nadu government in Chennai on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa.
The company, a subsidiary of The Chennai Silks Group and a supplier to leading global apparel brands, has been allotted five acres of land near Mannargudi by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited, according to a company representative.
Construction of the new unit is expected to be completed next year. The facility is intended to generate employment, particularly for rural women in Tiruvarur district. Industries Minister Rajaa said the unit would employ around 2,500 people comprising 2,200 direct and 300 indirect jobs.
Senior officials including Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, Industries Secretary V. Arun Roy, and Guidance Executive Director D. Alarmelmangai were present. SCM Garments Managing Director P. P. K. Paramasivam, Executive Director P. Kousik Kumaran, and Tiruppur Exporters’ Association President K. M. Subramanian also attended the event.
