Descente Ltd., Japanese sportswear manufacturer, recently launched the ‘Dual Air Down Vest’ under the brand, ‘Munsingwear’. The new lighter and warmer down gilet has been produced using a “special” sewing method that prevents feathers coming out of the seams, a reported by the company.
The vest is designed with a two-tier structure consisting only of outer and lining materials. The construction technique used in the vest is “Hakomachi structure” where, the box seams are tucked inside, resulting in no sewing stitches on the outer fabric.

“As part of the sewing process, the stitches of the seams between the outer and lining fabrics are tucked inwards and upwards, creating pockets into which the down is inserted. As well as eliminating stitches on the outer fabric, thereby preventing the down from slipping through the needle holes, the upward-facing seam also helps to secure the down,” the company explains.
The features together lead to less fabric consumption in the down-packed part of the vest, thus also reduces the weight. The use of high-quality down from Japan’s Kawada Feather’s 900-fill Power Down that contains a large amount of air has made the vest lighter and warmer than ordinary down vests, the company claims. In addition, high-density outer and lining materials also prevent the down from coming out of the fabric, further aiding the Hakomachi structure sewing technique.
