The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish India’s first 120 tonnes per annum (TPA) Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at the PM MITRA Park in Amravati, Maharashtra.
The project will establish a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development, comprising a carbon fibre technology demonstration plant, an advanced research and development centre, a testing and characterisation laboratory, a technology validation and scale-up facility, a skill development and training centre, and an industry support and technology transfer platform.
The facility aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial production by enabling pilot-scale manufacturing, product development, process validation and technology transfer. It is expected to accelerate the adoption of indigenous carbon fibre technology across Indian industries.
Carbon fibre is a high-performance material used in aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, railways, infrastructure, hydrogen storage and sports equipment. The project is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imports, strengthen domestic manufacturing, conserve foreign exchange and enhance the country’s strategic capabilities.
According to BTRA Director Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, the initiative will support research and innovation, foster industry-academia collaboration, strengthen startups and MSMEs, and help build a skilled workforce for the advanced composites sector.
