The Karnataka Government has decided to expedite the development of the proposed Mega Textile Park in Kalaburagi under the Centre’s PM MITRA scheme, a project announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the state Budget.
Speaking after a progress review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Karnataka Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge stated that the Department of Handlooms and Textiles had been instructed to immediately revise the Detailed Project Report (DPR), including external infrastructure works for the Kalaburagi textile park, and submit it to the Project Approval Committee (PAC) of the Government of India.
The review meeting was attended by Industries Minister MB Patil, senior officials from the Department of Industries and Commerce, the textiles department, Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), and the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
According to Priyank Kharge, discussions during the meeting focused on the immediate commencement of the first phase of development works by KIADB. The second phase of the project is expected to be launched subsequently, based on the level of investment attracted and employment generated during the initial phase.
Under the Central Government’s Development Capital Support (DCS) scheme, the project will be eligible for financial assistance amounting to 30% of the total project cost, subject to a maximum limit of Rs. 500 crore (US $52.44 million). The minister stated that the grant would be utilised for the development of internal infrastructure, including roads, water supply, power infrastructure, a common effluent treatment plant (CETP), and hostel facilities.
The state government will also provide a minimum of Rs. 25 crore (US $2.62 million) through the state implementing agency to facilitate the release of the first instalment of funds for the project. Priyank Kharge said officials had been directed to initiate the process for disbursing funds towards physical infrastructure development.
The proposed mega textile park is expected to strengthen the industrial ecosystem in Kalaburagi district, support economic growth, and generate large-scale employment opportunities in the region.
