Amazon India has expanded its dedicated air cargo network in the country by introducing a new route connecting Guwahati and Kolkata under its Amazon Air service, a move aimed at strengthening logistics infrastructure and accelerating deliveries across the Northeast.
The company said the new route is expected to significantly improve delivery timelines in the region, potentially speeding up shipments by up to five times. The service will support deliveries across the seven northeastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
The freighter service, launched in 2023, initially connected major logistics hubs including Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
The inaugural Amazon Air flight to Guwahati was flagged off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi by Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, India’s Minister for Civil Aviation, on Friday.
Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of Assam, stated that the introduction of Amazon Air services to Guwahati would enable businesses in the region to connect more effectively with customers across India. He noted that improved fulfilment speeds would allow sellers to reach a wider customer base and participate more actively in the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy. Kota also added that faster and more reliable logistics services would benefit customers and communities across Assam and the wider Northeast, while the expansion of logistics infrastructure could generate significant employment opportunities for local youth and contribute to regional economic growth.
According to Abhinav Singh, Vice President for Operations in India and Australia at Amazon, the expansion would significantly enhance delivery timelines for customers across the Northeast. He stated that the new service would allow customers in the region to receive packages up to five times faster than before. Singh also noted that sellers in the Northeast would now be able to reach customers across every postcode in India more quickly than earlier.
Amazon Air currently operates two narrow-body freighter aircraft three days a week, with plans to expand the schedule to six or seven days a week in the future.
In addition to its dedicated cargo fleet, Amazon India also utilises cargo capacity from other Indian airlines to support its nationwide logistics network.
