UK retailers showcased resilience in December 2024, defying a slight overall retail sales decline, according to a report from the Office for National Statistics. Despite ongoing cost-of-living pressures, the non-food sector experienced a 1.1 per cent increase in sales volume, driven by a robust 4.4 per cent surge in clothing sales.
This suggests consumers are strategically allocating their spending, prioritising key seasonal events like Christmas and Black Friday. Online sales continued to thrive, accounting for 27 per cent of total retail revenue and experiencing a 1.5 per cent monthly increase in value.
The broader retail sector also showed signs of recovery, with fourth-quarter sales rising 1.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2023. This follows a challenging period for the clothing sector in the autumn.
The December data provides a glimmer of hope for the sector, demonstrating that retailers who can effectively adapt to evolving consumer behavior and deliver exceptional customer experiences can navigate challenging economic conditions and achieve success in the year ahead.
