Sri Lanka-based apparel manufacturer Hirdaramani Group has opened a clothing factory at Puthukkudiyiruppu, a city located in the north of the country, with an investment of Rs 450 million.
The new factory was opened with a vision to create opportunities for the youth of northern Sri Lanka. The group has become the only largescale employer, with over 1,000 employees, with stable incomes, a positive working environment, free meals and custom-made training programmes that strengthen their skill sets.

Hirdaramani Group Director Janak Hirdaramani said, “We have around 1,050 employees from this region working for us. It was when we opened our first factory in Vavuniya that we realised the dearth of employment opportunities for the youth in the north. Thus it has been our mission to push into regions away from the Western Province, so as to develop these areas. We may expand this company, as we have in Vavuniya. But it will all be in good time.”

The factory currently employs over 500 sewing machine operators (SMOs), and utilizes over 320 machines that deliver a monthly capacity of over 150,000 garments. Apart from direct opportunities, the locals will also gain indirect benefits from this factory. This factory is expected to be instrumental in the development of the Mullaitivu region, which is the largest in north Sri Lanka and also happens to be war-torn.
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena was the Chief Guest of the opening of Hirdaramani factory.
