New York-based Body Labs has introduced 3D body ‘modelling’ technology, an upgrade of the trending 3D body scanning. The technology provider started working with the companies that could afford huge body scanners to fine-tune their body modelling fit abilities, as back in 2013, not many people owned body scanners as they were massive and expensive. Body Labs enables the designers to virtually simulate how a garment would fit on a body of any proportions, before creating anything physically. The advanced technology even simulates how the garment would move on the body.

The unique technology by Body Labs can also be used to compare same size across labels, creating 3D body models using each brand’s waist, hip, and bust measurements. Currently, the fit models are chosen randomly, and do not actually reflect the average consumer’s body. The average consumer also changes from region to region, for which, the solution is to create 3D body models by taking a lot of 3D scans, so that a retailer can know what a particular body size would truly look like among that customer base.
“Retail settings are perfect for scanning: You’re already changing in and out of clothes, and you have a private space. Adding in a quick spin in front of a tablet or stepping inside a booth lined with 3D sensors is easy,” said Flo McDavid, Director of Business Development at Body Labs. The recorded data can also be used for the e-commerce division of the same apparel retailer by using the digital body of the customer to customize the clothes that he or she is buying.
