
With the aim to update and upgrade the leather industrial estate and install new machines, the tannery owners have sought fiscal support from the Government even as the body of the tannery owners – the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) has called upon the Commerce Ministry to undertake necessary measures regarding the same.
The tannery owners reportedly made a proposal under the Leather Sector Business Promotion Council (LSBPC), to set up a mechanised chrome recovery plant, desalting machine, and hair filtering machine gradually even as the Chairman of the BTA, Shaheen Ahmed opined the volume of leather production and subsequent export declined due to the relocation of tanneries factories from Hajaribag to the Savar estate while adding the tannery owners faced financial loses, which aggravated further in view of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Given the existing situation, Shaheen Ahmed opined that tanners are constrained financially even as he requested the Government to provide necessary financial aid to install machinery at the respective manufacturing units.
