
Stating that Switzerland is a major foreign investor worldwide and all the major Swiss companies are operational here although the country’s investment in Bangladesh is still not impressive, Switzerland’s Ambassador in Bangladesh Christian M Fotsch underlined that Switzerland’s investment flow into Bangladesh will gain pace provided the political, business and investment climate is bolstered further in the country.

“The trade potential is still largely untapped. Bangladesh should diversify its trade basket and focus on new sectors like leather and ceramics,” said Fotsch at a meeting of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (CanCham) held in Dhaka, recently.
Dwelling on the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Switzerland in 2015, the Swiss envoy said Bangladesh’s exports to Switzerland rose 7 per cent year-on-year to US$362.78 million, while imports increased 20 per cent to US$162.63 million and went on to suggest that a massive campaign be launched in favour of Bangladesh in Europe and other major export destinations, as people there are not aware about the country’s real business strength.

“Bangladesh’s reputation is worse than the reality,” Fotsch said, while maintaining that holding seminars in Europe and North America, highlighting the positive achievements would help brighten Bangladesh’s image.
