Close on heels of the President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) expressing his concerns as to the impact of the ongoing students’ protest on Bangladesh’s trade and economy, the apex garment manufacturers’ body Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has also claimed the students’ demonstration was hurting the export oriented apparel sector of Bangladesh.
“Due to the ongoing student protests, the export oriented garment sector has faced the biggest trouble. For the last week, we have been unable to transport finished goods to Chittagong from Dhaka, or bring imported raw materials to Dhaka from Chittagong,” maintained BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman in a press conference at the BGMEA headquarters in capital Dhaka, adding, “The movement has tarnished the image of the country as well as the businesses.”
The BGMEA President further claimed that the ongoing demonstration has forced many global buyers to cancel their Bangladesh visit.
It may be mentioned here that continuing students’ protest has come under flak from the business community of the country with President of the country’s apex traders’ body Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) expressing his concerns earlier.
“We have been facing difficulty in doing overseas trade for the last eight days owing to the ongoing stalemate,” reportedly maintained President of the FBCCI Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, at a press conference in Dhaka earlier.
On July 29, two college students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College were reportedly killed when a bus ploughed through a group of students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in capital Dhaka following which students reportedly hit the streets demanding road safety and security.
