In an effort to detect and crackdown tax evasion, Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue or NBR is planning to set up a separate central risk management unit of the customs department to combat tax evasion through use of the technology.
According to media reports which cited NBR official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the new unit, by using software, will work towards eliminating revenue loss at all ports by identifying items that are prone to duty evasion.
The report further claimed that the unit will install state-of-the-art equipment at all ports for improving the supervision capabilities.
As part of the new move, the Government is reportedly planning to install container scanners at all points of customs inspection, to plug loopholes, keeping with which the NBR has reportedly procured 14 more scanners.
By doing this, it is expected to prevent misdeclaration, including under-invoicing and over-invoicing as well money laundering, claimed the report.
Further, it would also help prevent coming in of any prohibited and harmful items while also putting an end to smuggling of arms and narcotics.
An intelligence unit will also assist the central risk management unit, the report further added.
