The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in Bangladesh recently came down heavily on the Ministry of Industries for what it claimed “intentional” delay in shutting down non-compliant tanners that don’t have adequate facilities to treat their waste.
Media reports maintained this adding the Chairman of the parliamentary watchdog, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, reportedly, maintained that the Industries Ministry was dilly-dallying to seal off the factories at the tannery estate in Savar, which are polluting the environment with their waste, even as he urged the concerned ministry to close the errant units in the industrial hub without delay.
