Notwithstanding the Omicron wave in Bangladesh’s two major apparel export bastions of USA and Europe, new orders are coming in still with apparel exporters expressing hope the growth trajectory will continue as retailers in these two destinations continue to witness high footfalls even in the post-Christmas lean period thanks to pent-up demand for clothing amongst the end users.
Media reports maintained this citing the industry insiders.
Meanwhile, as per data from the country’s National Board of Revenue (NBR), apparel shipments registered around 32 per cent in growth to a little over US $ 869 million year-on-year in the first seven days of this year (2022) even though NBR was yet to officially announce the same, reports maintained while adding according to the BGMEA, receipts in 2021 and 2020 amounted to US $ 659 million and US $ 677 million, respectively.
Speaking to the media, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, reportedly, claimed Bangladesh garment makers were receiving a good number of work orders in the lean period following Christmas sales — the period from 15 December to 15 January goes by as a lean period owing to Christmas vacations — even as he underlined exporters have also not faced any cancellation or hold-up of orders yet.
