Members of a parliamentary delegation from Germany, while acknowledging the progress made by the Bangladesh readymade garment industry have maintained as parliamentarians, they cannot force buyers and brands to pay more for ‘Made in Bangladesh’ products but can talk to them about it.
The Chairperson of the German-South Asian Parliamentary Group and a former German Minister Renate Kunast — the German delegation visited Bangladesh recently — reportedly said other countries are producing apparel as well and there is also a competition.
“We cannot force someone to do so,” reportedly said Renate Kunast even as he added Bangladesh garment industry should be confident enough to say ‘you are big buyers for our country; you need these clothes, so pay us in a fair way.’
The delegation also reportedly appreciated Bangladesh’s rapid socio-economic development and its outstanding achievements in occupational safety and working conditions in the apparel sector over the years.
