The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has made a heartfelt appeal to its members to contribute to the establishment of an RMG museum at its headquarters in Dhaka.
Scheduled to open on 14th August, the museum aims to commemorate the rich history and growth of the readymade garment sector in Bangladesh.
In a letter issued by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan recently, the members were urged to donate old archives and artifacts related to the industry even as the items sought include copies of old letters of credit and other commercial documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, sewing machines, and other machinery used in the early 1980s.
Additionally, the association requested letters, faxes, telexes, diaries, presentations, and any other relevant documents of historical value. Contributions of office equipment like typewriters, computers, fax machines, and biographies of industry pioneers were also encouraged to be part of the museum’s exhibits.
Faruque Hassan emphasised that every donated item would be acknowledged with due credit to the respective contributors. With the RMG industry playing a vital role in Bangladesh’s economy for four decades, it has become the world’s second-largest garment exporter, providing employment to millions of people.
However, despite its significant impact, much of the industry’s history remains unknown, and many stories and memories risk being lost over time. The museum’s establishment is envisioned to preserve and showcase the evolution of the RMG industry, from its humble beginnings to its current position as a global leader. By doing so, future generations can learn about the challenges and triumphs faced by the industry and gain insights into its remarkable journey.
The BGMEA seeks unwavering support from its members in making the museum a reality—a place that will proudly house and exhibit the legacy of the RMG sector, offering a glimpse into its growth and achievements.
