Cambodian labor unions have lowered their demands for a 60 per cent increase to the country’s US $ 100 minimum wage, as new minimum wage standards are awaited next month. Unions have reset the demand to US $ 150 a month during a meeting with officials from the Garment Manufacturers’ Association in Cambodia. Unions had been pushing for US $ 160 for at least a year and which even rose to US $ 177 in recent weeks. The new called-for wage, US $ 110 per mo, however, is still significantly higher than what factory representatives have said they would concede to. As per the Clean Clothes Campaign US $ 100 falls 21 per cent short of what it considers to be a living wage for Cambodia’s workers.
