Facing the heat of tense bilateral relations, Indian Government has been taking several steps against China. And now Ministry of Textiles is also active in this regard with its plans to discourage the import of silk from China in the coming days.
It is pertinent to mention here that the as per official data of Indian Government, India imported raw silk (HS code 5002) of US $ 95 million from China in 2019-2020.
The Government is contemplating measures in this regard.
According to a report, the Parliamentary standing committee on labour had a meeting on Challenges and Opportunities – Indian Textile Industry where officials indicated that various measures to discourage the cheap import of silk from China are being planned and it will be announced.
Import of silk is hurting the growth of Indian textile industry, especially the silk producer and companies offering quality products.
Leading textile hub Varanasi and many other clusters offering silk products are facing challenges owing to import of Chinese silk.
