The concerns of the individuals who deal in rawhides, as to their prices, seem to have ended after the Bangladesh Government has decided to directly procure rawhides of sacrificial animals from the field-level markets during Eid-ul-Azha in coming years.
“We will not sit idle as traders do not act as per the consensus they reach with the ministry. We have also spoken to the Prime Minister about the issue,” maintained Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi at a recent press briefing while adding that the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) would directly procure the product from the field level in every district as the private sector traders did not purchase rawhides during Eid at the prices set by the ministry.
Like in previous years, the ministry had also set the rawhide prices after holding talks with tanners and other traders concerned this year, he said.
The ministry has taken the decision to procure the item through the TCB to avoid recurrence of such crisis in future.
