Several international clothing retailers and brands have officially committed to increasing payments to their suppliers, absorbing the surge in wages, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has underlined.
Media reports claimed this adding BGMEA President Faruque Hassan shared the positive development, stating, “It’s quite encouraging that we have received formal letters from a few brands confirming their position to pay a price that absorbs the increase in wages.”
He conveyed this message through a statement delivered to journalists and factory owners via WhatsApp.
The BGMEA chair further emphasised that all these retailers and brands have provided assurances of their support to the factories in implementing the new wage rate.
The new wage, as per the gazette notification, became effective on 1st December 2023, with workers slated to receive the updated wages starting from the beginning of the new year, i.e., January 2024.
