
A visiting European Parliament delegation, led by Member of Parliament Jean Lambert, has reportedly expressed satisfaction at the continuing reform initiatives undertaken by the readymade garments factories to ensure safe and secure working environment.
The delegation, which called upon the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) officials at the BGMEA office recently, reportedly expressed satisfaction over the reform process, while urging that more initiatives should be undertaken in the field of labour rights and wages.

Addressing a press meet after the meeting with the BGMEA, Lambert reportedly underlined that they have been following the progress in the local RMG sector and recognises the importance of the garment sector for both Bangladesh and the European Union (EU), where a major chunk of Bangladeshi apparels are exported. She further added that EU brands that take products from Bangladesh have a role to play in ensuring that those are made in a congenial atmosphere as far as workplace safety, fair price and reasonable wage are concerned.

Dwelling on the meeting with the delegation, BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman reportedly stated that the European Parliament team had assured BGMEA to ‘have detailed discussion on fixing fair prices for garments products after returning to their respective countries’.
Another member of the delegation, Ivan Stefanec, reportedly also praised the various moves of BGMEA and the Government in enhancing productivity through improvement of skill of the labour force.
“We also talked about the issue of currency depreciation, especially the US dollar and Euro, which we have to understand,” he said.
