Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apprised parliament that the Government plans to start producing electricity from hydrogen and ammonia by 2035.
“It is expected that it would be possible to use hydrogen energy on a pilot basis in the country by 2035,” she said in response to a query from Awami League lawmaker Habibur Rahman (Sylhet-3) about the industry’s electricity crisis.
The Prime Minister stated that a cell has been formed at the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) under Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) to collect the results of ongoing research and data from activities conducted in the developed world on sustainable and reliable methods of producing power with hydrogen.
The cell will design a project proposal after receiving reliable information in this regard, she added.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister believed that the 1,200-megawatt first unit of the 2,400-megawatt Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will begin commercial production by the end of this year. She stated that by 2041, the country aims to generate 40 per cent of its electricity from clean energy (renewable sources).
